Not just a mom

I am not just a mother… I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and a role model. Throughout my daughter’s life I have always had to work, I didn’t get the opportunity to be a stay at home mom (as much as I would have liked to).  It’s difficult having to work and raise a family.  So how do you connect with your kids in the downtime when there’s always homework or extra activities?  You do arts and crafts, play music and dance around the living room, sing badly together, play in the yard, have weekend camp-outs (whether it’s in backyard or living room) and just have fun.

In the summer time I use to do a mom camp on random weekends and we would camp-out in the backyard (with the dog), do science experiments, art projects, and other fun stuff.  My daughter said she doesn’t remember all the crafts we made or what we baked, but she remembers always making something/doing something.

My nieces and nephews spent alot of time at our house; we played games, did crafts, and watched movies. There were many weekends we stayed up late playing Life, Clue and Sorry and laughing.  I always made sure we did a craft or baked or something when they stayed with me.  There were many times we would all fall asleep in the living room watching movies.  A few years ago we had to sell our house.  My niece Brandie was upset and  said there were so many memories there.  That’s something they will always carry with them, memories of all the fun we had.

No, I am not just a mother, I’m a role model.  I’ve raised my now 20-year-old daughter to be independent-a leader and to not follow the crowd, I have encouraged her creativity, and tried to make sure she can cope with our crazy world .  I’ve seen to many “Mother’s” who aren’t mothers and “Father’s” who aren’t fathers.  They weren’t ready to be parents and forget that the children come first because they themselves are still children or put themselves first.  They put drugs, alcohol, their cellphone, friends ahead of their kids.  The children are who suffer and it’s not fair.

My goal has always been to make my daughter proud. My husband calls me super-wife and my daughter supermom.  Take time to be a role model, teach the children, spend time with them, and encourage them.  They are our future….

Now…off of my soap box

Here are some weekend family fun ideas

  1. Spend time outside with the kids playing in yard, going for a walk in the park, hike, bike, skate, camping out in the backyard, go fishing
  2. Plant a garden together, teach kids about the land and where their food comes from
  3. Get on the floor and play with the kids, whether its building blocks, cars & trucks, or dolls/action figures
  4. Dig out the playdoh
  5. Make a family game night
  6. Have dinner at the table together and share your day
  7. Crafting, baking
  8. During the holidays make the gifts and decorations
  9. Have an electronics free weekend

These might seem like a “duh” but you’d be surprised.  Sometimes, family time is all you need after a tough week to help you get recentered.

So many ideas!!!

Think-creative

Have you ever had so many ideas you don’t know where to start?

Ideas come from everywhere when your a crafter.  Some ideas come because you have a need or you have kids your keeping busy but at the end of the day we crafters just have a want/need to create something fun and new.  One of the problem we face is that there are so many idea sources out there.  Pinterest, Facebook, other crafters, conversations with family and friends, flipping through a magazine, or your watching a home improvement show.  You hit overload and want to do everything; which is why you have 87 boards on Pinterest…LOL

What happens when you decide on your new projects?   You go out and purchase supplies and those supplies sit there because another fabulous idea pops in your head and you go get more supplies.  What’s a crafter to do?!

Sometimes you just need to step away, clear your head and then go back, look at your pile and sort through it and decide what needs to get done first.  During craft show season is the worst….you want to make and take so many things but what will consumers buy? What season are you in, and what do you do first?

I think I need to take a page from my daughters book and start making a to do list; her to do list is more of a bullet journal that she decided she wanted to make to help get herself organized but I don’t see that as helpful for myself.  I think I need to start working on those things I have started first and then move onto the projects I bought all those supplies for (which is alot…lol).

I’d love to hear about your struggles with crafting organization and tips on how you keep yourself on track.  What do you do during craft show season to keep yourself organized and on track?
